Espardenya is the Catalan term for espadrille, and derives from Esparto, the plant used 7 centuries ago to make the soles of the espadrilles (Catalan is the official language of Catalonia).
In our village of La Rioja, Spain, the soles of our espadrilles whent through the centuries  through many types of forms and materials, from Esparto, to hemp, sisal and jute.
